Massage:
Bathtime can be an ideal occasion to enjoy some massage with your baby. Once they have good head support, use one arm to support your baby from the front. Use the gentle lather from the wash to massage across your baby’s back in a rhythmic backwards and forwards motion working your way down and then up again.
Massage can be enjoyed any time of day but make sure you are both ready, your baby calm and alert and you not feeling rushed. Avoid massaging when your baby is hungry or unsettled, has a temperature or seems unwell and over skin that has cuts, sores, recent bruising or is inflamed. Try to make eye contact, speak and, if you like, sing to your baby as you massage.
Nutrition:
Water, water everywhere….when deciding what to give your baby to drink this should be your first choice after breast or formula milk. If a preference for water isn’t established at weaning, children can grow up favouring sweetened drinks to quench their thirst. If they don’t immediately take to the taste (or lack) of pure water, persevere. By continuing to offer it most babies will develop a liking and come to accept it (this is also a good rule for any food initially rejected when weaning).
Fruit juice can be a useful source of vitamins and is a drink parents often give, particularly if their children are fussy about eating whole fruits. When included they should be well mixed with plenty of water to dilute the fruit acids and protect the teeth.
Avoid anything labelled as squash, fruit nectar or fruit drink which will also contain sugar or artificial sweeteners.
